How to Improve Air Quality for Earth Day!

Let Earth Day Inspire Your Air Quality Initiatives

It’s not often that people think about the air that everyone breathes. Since breathing is an unconscious action, most people generally don’t give it much thought until something goes wrong. What many people don’t realize is that the air they breathe has an impact on their whole system. After all, air is essential for life, and good air can do much to make a good life.

While you think about that in terms of outside influences, like staying away from people that smoke and avoiding car smog, you may not be thinking about your home! Luckily, here are a few things you can do to increase the quality of air in your own home along with home ventilation. Breathe easy with the tips below.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

air purifiersA common filtering system considered by many today is that of UV light. The UV systems available use ultraviolet (UV) light to kill viruses and bacteria as well as to get rid of harmful ozone. Since a UV system by itself isn’t technically a filter, it is best used in areas where the air has already been filtered somewhat.

This is why UV systems are great for use in conjunction with your HVAC system. Installing small-particle filters in your home’s AC system can drastically help to improve the air quality in your home. Small particle filters have a high HEPA rating, meaning they are designed to filter smaller particles out of the air than those with a lower HEPA rating.

For most home HVAC systems, you’ll want to use filters with ratings of 13-16. Any higher and you could risk straining your AC system and reducing the airflow in your home, due to the thickness and density of the higher-rated HEPA filters.

Of course, there is still the old fashioned way of freshening the air in your home: opening the windows. While this isn’t advisable for those with allergies, it is something people often overlook when thinking about purifying the air in their homes, particularly when something has been burned in the kitchen or you’ve been cleaning with chemicals around the house.

Always Try Adding Plants

Having house plants in your home is a great way to get fresh air right from the source. Not only do plants create oxygen, but they tend to have an uplifting and peaceful effect on the people who live around them. Plants--both indoors and out— benefit not just those in the immediate vicinity, but everyone on earth.

Plants make life on earth possible, they filter out toxins, and provide for the diverse life found all over the globe. So if you’re not able to plant a tree this Earth Day, the next best thing is to get a plant or two for your house!

The Benefits of Modern Thermostats

thermostatsThanks to recent technological inventions, smart thermostats have become commonplace in millions of American homes. Many smart thermostats make use of sensors in the house, the internet, and apps for smartphones to help reduce energy consumption. Not only do they help the environment, but they help many people save, on average, between 10 and 20 percent on their electric bill.

Additionally, many of these thermostats have smartphone integration, which allows you to adjust and protect your home, even when you’re not there. Smart thermostats are a great way to celebrate Earth Day, plus they can save you money for years to come!
