How Often Should You Change Your Air Filter? A Birmingham HVAC Guide
When was the last time you changed your air filter? It's an easy chore to put off, especially when your heating and cooling system seems to be working fine. For most homes, a standard 1-inch filter needs replacing every 1 to 3 months, and a thicker 4- to 5-inch media filter every 6 to 12 months. Waiting longer lets dust and debris build up, which cuts airflow, raises energy costs, and puts extra wear on your equipment.
Does a clean air filter improve indoor air quality?
Every time your HVAC blower runs, it pulls air from your home through the return and across the filter. A properly fitted filter captures some of the dust, pollen, and pet dander in the air before it circulates back through your rooms. How much it catches depends on the filter's efficiency, how well it fits, and how often air passes through it.
When you shop for a filter, check the MERV rating. A higher rating generally means the filter catches smaller particles. For most homes, a MERV 8 to 11 filter is the sweet spot. Going higher can restrict airflow on systems that weren't designed for it, so choose a filter your system can handle.
Can a dirty air filter raise your utility bill?
Think about a cold January night in Hoover. Your furnace is already running hard to keep the house warm. If the filter is clogged, less warm air reaches your rooms with each cycle, so the system runs longer to reach the thermostat setting. That means more energy use and a higher bill. The same thing happens with your AC in July.
If you notice weaker airflow at several vents, or your system is running longer than usual, check the filter first. If the problem continues after a filter change, a technician can look for other airflow or equipment issues.
Can a clogged filter damage your HVAC system?
Your filter also keeps dust and dirt away from the parts inside your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump. Letting it clog again and again can add wear to the blower motor, and dirt buildup inside the system can lead to repairs or early equipment failure. Replacing a dirty filter is one of the simplest ways to avoid that.
Keith has been working on Birmingham-area systems since 1997, and he'll tell you that plenty of "my system isn't keeping up" calls turn out to be a dirty filter. When that's all it is, we'll tell you.
How often should you change your HVAC air filter?
Check your filter on the first of every month. Replace a disposable filter when it's visibly dirty or when it reaches its recommended interval, whichever comes first:
1-inch filters: every 1 to 3 months
4- to 5-inch media filters: every 6 to 12 months
Check more often if you have pets, are doing renovations, or are running your system heavily during a cold snap or heat wave. If your system uses a washable filter, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
When you install the new filter, use the size listed for your system and point the arrow on the frame in the direction of airflow, usually toward the blower. Write the date on the frame so you know how long it's been in.
